Princess Margaretha route

On the themed hiking trails you can enjoy nature and learn about the history of the Eifel region around Adenau.
The Princess Margaretha route allows hikers to take a trip into the past along a beautiful and scenic route.
In 1544, at the age of 17, Margaretha became the Princess of Arenberg, and, together with Johann von Ligne Freiherr von Barbaçon, established the third line of the Arenberg lineage. She was widowed at the young age of 41 and took over the administration of the imperial principality. She introduced sustainable forestry and agriculture and promoted mining and ore processing. In many ways she was ahead of her time and introduced mandatory lessons in reading, writing and catechism for all children of her subjects.
The hiking route takes you through the former principality and affords magnificent views of the beautiful Eifel region.
Starting points for the 28-kilometre hiking tour can be Aremberg, Wershofen, Eichenbach or Antweiler. The restaurants and inns there have all been awarded the quality award ‘Wanderbares Deutschland’ (hikeable Germany) and guarantee a high level of quality.

Hiking maps, route descriptions and information about where to eat and stay the night are available from the tourist information centre Hocheifel-Nürburgring, Kirchstr. 15 - 19, 53518 Adenau; telephone: +49(0)2691/305-122.
